This is a small study for a very large work (162.6 x 129.5 cms) that was exhibited in 1909 and is now in the collections of Leeds Museums & Art Galleries. The likely model is Phyllis Gotch, the daughter of fellow artists, Caroline and Thomas Cooper Gotch. She is wearing one of Laura Knights dresses, which appears in several paintings of the period. Harold painted Phyllis wearing this blue silk dress on at least two occasions - the other entitled The Reader, shows her posing en plein air, also reading a letter.
